About David Brauchli
David Brauchli is an American photojournalist who covered the siege of Sarajevo for the Associated Press beginning in 1992. On May 17 of that year, he was seriously wounded by shrapnel in an attack that also killed his colleague, Spanish photographer Jordi Pujol Puente, the first international journalist killed in the Bosnia. After recovering, Brauchli continued to document the Siege and its aftermath, capturing some of the war's most enduring images, including children dodging sniper fire along Sniper Alley. A graduate of Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Journalism (1986), Brauchli worked as a professional news photographer for nearly two decades, on assignment for the Associated Press, Reuters, Agence France-Presse, the European Pressphoto Agency, The New York Times, Sygma and Corbis. He also helped found Newsmakers, an early online photo agency that later became part of Getty Images. Beyond Bosnia, Brauchli's work took him to cover major historical events including South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994 and the end of apartheid, the war in Kosovo and the First Chechen War. He was a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his photography from Sarajevo, South Africa and Grozny.
