About Markus Matzel
Markus Matzel was born in Schwelm in 1967. He is a photographer, cameraman, film journalist, author, and editor. In 1992 and the following year, he worked as a freelance photographer during the War in Bosnia covering Sarajevo Siege and completed an internship with photographer Henning Christoph in 1993 (exhibition "Mustafa's Dream"). In 2002 and 2003, during the beginning of the Iraq War, he was the only German photographer in Baghdad and wrote a photo essay about his experiences. Matzel has worked for publications including Spiegel, Focus, ARD, and Phoenix. "Escape from War" was his second exhibition at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site.
